2. Deontic Document

Following the discussion above, CRO provides a Deontic document category as a sibling of Knowledge Document under Document. A deontic document is any informational artifact that states social obligations of any kind among identified parties or kinds of parties (e.g. 'the public healthcare system'). It may be understood as stating intention to bring about some specific kind of change (often actions, such as medication administration or insuring of a home) in the future.

The form of content of a Deontic document varies widely, and may consist of any of the following:

  • the text of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between two companies;

  • a government tender, aka Reqeust for Proposal (RFP);

  • a clinical care plan for a patient with breast cancer, consisting of recommended therapeutic strategy and reasoning; goals; medication / therapeutic orders; timing; patient preferences and other relevant content;

  • a prescription containing medication order(s), each of which can be used to perform administration or execution of the order;

  • an invoice from a consulting firm to a customer, consisting of line items, fees and payment details;

  • a will, consisting of a list of goods and beneficiaries, potentially with conditions attached;

  • an engineering order to perform specific maintenance on all engines on a certain type of aircraft;

  • a piece of legislation making the incitement of violence a criminal offence.
